A Sister's Tales of an Elder Brother

Created by Catharine 3 years ago

When Will was growing up in Feltham, he used to go over the pits to collect things that had been dumped. There were long pieces of coloured plastic thin tubing that we could make into bracelets etc.

At Job's Dairy, he got tubes of the cardboard lids they used for milk bottle tops. You could press a small part out of the centre then we used to cover with wool or raffia. The wool ones used to make pom-poms and raffia ones could be sewn together and Mum could make bags etc. out of them.

One day, Will and his mates got a part of an aircraft wing and him and his mates carried it up to the pond in Feltham. They used it as a sort of raft and took it in turns to take a mate to the centre of the pond and climb onto the island. I was left until last and when we got to the island I stood on the wrong end of it and it tipped me in the pond. I was made to walk home by myself soaked to the skin. Boy, was Will in trouble with mum when he got home!

One day, mum sent Will shopping. He came home to proudly announce he had gained one pound of weight overnight. Mum said, "what did you do with the sausages while you weighed yourself?" "Put them under my jacket." Was the reply.

From a young age he always wanted to be "a cooker". So one morning Mum came down stairs to find Will at the pantry. He had the enamel bread bin and had poured all the dry ingredients into it. With everything being on ration - he was not a popular boy!

He used to look so smart when he went to the Boys Brigade. He was chosen to go to Buckingham Palace and be in a parade in front of King George VI

When he worked at Floris's the Bakers he helped make a birthday cake for Winston Churchill.

Lots of love
